Conditions we treat

Sciatica

Pain that shoots down the leg from irritation or compression along the sciatic nerve. We look for what's actually pressing on the nerve, not just where the pain radiates.

What sciatica actually is

Sciatica isn't a diagnosis on its own, it's a description of pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, usually from the low back through the buttock and down the back of the leg. What's actually causing that irritation, most often a disc pressing on a nerve root or a misaligned segment in the low back, is what determines how it should be treated.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp or shooting pain down one leg
  • Numbness or tingling that travels into the foot
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
  • Weakness in the leg or foot in more significant cases
  • Pain that's noticeably worse on one side than the other

How we evaluate it here

Digital X-rays and a hands-on exam help us find where the compression is likely coming from. If we find signs of a more significant nerve deficit, like true muscle weakness or loss of reflexes, we'll tell you directly and help coordinate advanced imaging or a referral rather than treating around it.

How we treat sciatica

Where a disc is involved, CBP traction helps take pressure off the nerve while chiropractic adjustment works on the alignment issue underneath it, supported by physiotherapy to build the strength that keeps it from coming back. Our Traction Therapy service page goes into more detail on how that works.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is sciatica always caused by a herniated disc?+

No. A disc is a common cause, but misalignment, muscle tension near the sciatic nerve, or joint restrictions in the low back can also produce the same radiating pain pattern.

How long does sciatica usually last?+

It depends entirely on the underlying cause. Some cases ease within weeks of care, others tied to a more significant disc issue take longer and need a more structured plan.

Should I stay active or rest with sciatica?+

For most cases, some movement is better than strict rest, but the right amount depends on what's actually causing it. We'll give you specific guidance after your exam.

Can sciatica come back after it goes away?+

Yes, especially if the underlying misalignment or disc issue was never fully addressed, just calmed down. That's why we aim treatment at the structural cause, not only the pain.

When does sciatica need more than chiropractic care?+

If you notice true weakness, loss of feeling, or trouble controlling your bladder or bowel, that needs immediate medical attention, not a chiropractic visit. We'll screen for that during your exam.
