Class IV Laser
A non-invasive treatment that uses concentrated light energy to help support the body's natural healing process. The laser delivers therapeutic energy to targeted areas, which may help reduce pain and inflammation while supporting circulation, tissue repair, and recovery.
What Class IV laser therapy is
Class IV laser therapy uses concentrated light energy delivered directly to a targeted area of the body. It's non-invasive, meaning no needles and no incisions, and it's used to support the body's own healing response rather than mask discomfort.
It works through a process sometimes called photobiomodulation: light in the red to near-infrared range is absorbed by an enzyme inside your cells' mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase. That absorption appears to support the electron transport chain your cells use to produce ATP, the energy your tissue needs to repair itself.
With more cellular energy available, the local processes involved in reducing inflammation and rebuilding tissue have more to work with, which is the general theory behind why laser therapy is used for pain and healing support rather than pain relief alone.
Why Class IV, specifically
Laser therapy comes in different power classes. Class IV lasers use a higher-powered beam than the lower-power "cold" lasers used in some clinics, which allows the light to reach deeper tissue in a shorter session.
That extra power is also why the equipment and dosing matter. Sessions are dosed to the area and condition being treated, not run on a single fixed setting for every patient and every visit.
What a session is like
A handheld device is passed over the treatment area for a few minutes. Most patients feel mild warmth and nothing more. There's no downtime, so you can go straight back to your day after a session.
What it's often used for
Laser is typically brought into a plan where circulation and tissue repair are the priority, either on their own or alongside a joint that's already being adjusted or trained.
- Supporting circulation and tissue repair
- Helping reduce localized inflammation
- Recovery support alongside an adjustment or rehab plan
- Joint stiffness that limits range of motion
How it fits with the rest of your plan
Laser therapy here is used as part of a broader plan, alongside adjustments and rehab, not as a stand-alone fix. Dr. Johns will tell you honestly whether it fits what's going on with you.
It's not meant to replace an adjustment or rehab work. Think of it as support for the healing your body is already doing because of the rest of your care plan.
